DYLAN CRITCHFIELD-SALES: ITALIAN LANDSCAPES

FALL/WINTER ‘21/’22

Dylan’s paintings translate the nuance of reality into simple forms of light and shadow, and warm and cool color relationships. In his landscapes, Dylan conveys a clear and genuine atmosphere that gives the viewer a sense of having been there themselves.

In the Summer of 2019 Dylan spent three months as an Artist in Residence with the Jerusalem Studio School in Civita Castellana, Italy; a place where Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) and his contemporaries spent months at a time painting the environs.

For many years, Dylan has studied and drawn inspiration from the work of Corot, particularly the oil sketches from Italy. The work on display represents Dylan’s travels throughout Italy, engaging with the views Corot painted and researching modernist still life and landscape painter Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) and medieval renaissance fresco painters. This body of work is a synthesis of these influences yet a distinctive expression of Dylan’s experience of the light and landscape of Italy.
