Inspired by places traveled, and by others yet to be explored, Michael Lotenero balances identity, place and memory through constructed relics from unrealized civilizations. Other ghosts linger from the past, while some visit from the future through paintings and mixed media.

Lotenero conjures apparitions in found photos of turn-of-the-century New York, and in images he's taken in Rome, Pompeii, and Florence. Or, he might bury an entirely finished, sometimes colorful painting, under a new layer of white and line – bewitching the viewer to sense something underneath, adding hidden meaning and weight.
