Chris McGinnis is a visual artist, arts leader, husband and father of two girls working in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He has created projects for the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and SPACE Pittsburgh among many others.
His artwork has been exhibited widely, with more than ten solo exhibitions and over fifty group exhibitions in recent years. Primarily working in paint and two-dimensional media, Chris draws inspiration from the intersection of heavy industry, technology and the human experience, often questioning established notions of progress in the modern era.
He has taught as Assistant Professor of Art for national institutions including Carnegie Mellon University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Arizona. In 2016 Chris founded the Rivers of Steel Arts program, based at the Carrie Blast Furnaces National Historic Landmark, offering programs in Graffiti, Folk and Metal Arts, as well as regional placemaking initiatives and popular events including Alloy Pittsburgh and The Festival of Combustion. In his current position as Director and Chief Curator, Chris leads a dedicated team of creatives working to build local pride in place, and promote arts and heritage tourism to enhance the lives of individuals throughout the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area.
